Crane faces Rios on Saturday
Mixed martial arts fighter Alberto Crane warms up at Main Event Sports Club in Glendale. (Raul Roa/News-Press)
Mixed martial arts: Glendale fighter’s opponent changes, but he says game plan remains the same.

GLENDALE — It was a bout that had drawn buzz among hardcore mixed martial arts fans and media and, no doubt, had those behind the scenes at CalledOut MMA excited to feature it, but the grappling showdown between Glendale’s Alberto Crane and Wander Braga scheduled for Saturday is no more.
Instead, the 33-year-old Crane might very well have a tougher task in front of him as he’s set to face Albert Rios on Saturday night as part of CalledOut MMA’s third event at the Ontario Citizens Business Bank Arena.
“I think he’s a more well-rounded guy [than Braga],” said Crane of Rios. “Albert Rios is definitely a tough guy. It should be a good fight.”
Braga reportedly backed out of the fight to return to his native Brazil to tend to his ill mother. The bout between him and Crane would have pitted two world-renowned Brazilian jiu jitsu black belts.
Now, Crane is assuredly in for another type of fighter.
“It’s kind of a contrast of styles,” said CalledOut MMA matchmaker George Bastrmajyan. “Albert Rios has fairly decent striking and good wrestling against Alberto Crane, who’s just a phenomenal jiu jitsu practioner.”
Nonetheless, Crane, who said he found out about the change of opponent on Nov. 1, does not intend on changing anything in terms of approach or strategy.
“I’m just gonna go in there and bring it,” Crane said. “I’m just gonna do the same things I was [going to do against Braga].”
Crane, who has been training locally for the fight, brings a 12-4 record to the cage, having won 11 fights via submission. He’s also a former two-time Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran.
Rios (11-4) has won once and lost once via submission, with nine of his fights having been decided by decision, six going his way. His last fight came at CalledOut MMA’s first card on May 16, where he lost a unanimous decision to Georgi Karakhanyan. The loss broke a five-fight winning streak for Rios.
Crane is also coming off a loss that ended a four-fight string of victories. He was knocked out in the first round of a bout against Tony Hervey, a late replacement who’s since gone on to win the King of the Cage lightweight title and fought Takanori Gomi, formerly ranked as the No. 1 lightweight in the world, to a spirited decision loss.
Crane said his loss, nor the five-month layoff, will leave any lingering effects.
“I want to kinda move forward, I had a lot of momentum, but stuff happens,” said Crane, whose previous four wins before the Hervey loss came via first-round submissions. “It’s another fight for me, but I’m definitely anxious to get out there.”
As for Crane, who owns and runs Legacy Martial Arts in Encino, there really has been no layoff.
“I’ve been training the whole time,” he said. “I’m pretty seasoned actually from the last two years.”
Crane made his UFC debut in August of 2007, ending a more-than two-year layoff from MMA competition. Since then he’s fought eight times, going 4-4 in his comeback.
The bout will be a three-round lightweight (155 pounds) contest, boding well for Crane one would think, as that’s his regular fighting weight, whereas Rios is generally a 145-pound fighter.
Also scheduled to fight, Glendale’s Sevak Magakian will take on Noe Quintanilla in a three-round lightweight bout. Magakian (7-2) was supposed to fight Bao Quach and then Jeremy Umphries before both backed out due to injuries. Quintanilla is 5-5.
Karakhanyan (12-1-1), who has trained locally at times, will face Vince Ortiz (7-2) in a 145-pound bout and Hector Ramirez (8-3-1), who is an assistant coach on the current “The Ultimate Fighter: Team Rampage vs. Team Rashad” series on Spike TV, will take on “The Ultimate Fighter” Season One alum Lodune Sincaid (15-7) in a 185-pound bout.
Doors open at 5 p.m. with the event scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

A Dream Absolute at No-Gi Worlds?
Romulo, Braga Neto and Yoshida just some to sign up
Can you imagine an absolute dispute between Josh Barnett, Antonio Braga Neto, Romulo Barral, Baret Yoshida, Nick Diaz, Rafael Lovato, Murilo Santana, Travis Lutter, Bruno Bastos, Marcelo Uirapuru, Antonio Peinado, Mike Fowler, Roberto Tussa and Pablo Popovitch?
Well it may happen, and this coming Sunday, November 8. After all, the aforementioned names are all on the list for the 3rd No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu World Championship, to take place in Long Beach, California.
All that’s left to know, and only on the big day, is who will be ready for the battle both at weight and in the running for the thorniest of challenges, winning the absolute gold.

11/1/09 Professor Alberto's upcoming fight makes Sherdog's Top Ten Fights to watch in November!!!!
As 2009 hits the home stretch, the stars come out. The world’s best fighters, even those who have remained relatively quiet, remember awards, titles, fame and fortune are up for grabs at the end of the year. More than a dozen athletes who are recognized as top 10 fighters in their respective weight classes -- and even a couple of pound-for-pound kings -- will ply their trades in November. Still, there are some unusual cases of hardship this month.
At any other time, fights involving heavy hitters like former UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin, reigning Strikeforce light heavyweight titleholder Gegard Mousasi and Takeshi Inoue might have been guaranteed a spot in the top 10. Not this time.
As always, the list does not necessarily focus on the major bouts you already know to watch, but rather on fights from all over the planet that are worth seeing.
